State of The Union Recap

Trump: The U.S. Must Not Squander Its Inheritance

February 06, 2019

After last night’s State of the Union, one thing is clear – if you were a fan of the President’s before – you still are. If you haven’t ever been, then it’s highly unlikely that you had an epiphany last night.

President Trump touched on a number of political themes common to the annual address: patriotism, national security and our country’s relationship to the world. But he also hit a number of more personal missions: including his ire over what he called “ridiculous, partisan investigations.” With House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over his shoulder, Mr. Trump delivered his address to the cheers of his supporters – and expected silence.

That being said, there were a few moments where the Democrats cheered the President’s comments – like when he remarked that “no one has benefitted more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58% of the new jobs created in the last year.” A group of Democratic women wearing white as a sign of solidarity and in honor of the suffragists had remained seated…until the applause found them pointing to themselves, standing – some even fist pumping.

Here’s a look at some other highlights from the event:

  • President Trump says the U.S. must not squander its inheritance. Delivering the annual State of the Union address tonight, Trump cited the "blood and tears and courage and vision of the Americans who came before."
  • He said the nation's leaders must "choose whether we are defined by our differences, or whether we dare to transcend them." Trump warned about foolish wars and "ridiculous, partisan investigations."
  • Citing the thriving U.S. economy and saying, "We must be united at home to defeat our adversaries abroad,” Trump called for an end to the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution. He asked lawmakers to heal old wounds and "choose greatness" for the common good.
  • The President asked Congress to enact legislation prohibiting late-term abortion – speaking of children, he also talked about funding for pediatric cancer research and increasing school choice.
  • And yes…he defended his demand for a massive border wall and called immigration an urgent national crisis. Not quite tipping his hand over the possibility of declaring a national emergency, the President called the situation “a moral issue” and called the southern border a "lawless state."
  • Trump also officially announced plans to hold a second summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un later this month in Vietnam.
  • Speaking of the region, Trump defended his trade policies, including the trade war he initiated with China. Trump accused Beijing of targeting U.S. industries and stealing America's intellectual property.
  • Trump also claimed victory over ISIS in Syria and defended his plan to remove U.S. troops from the war-torn nation. He also called Iran the world's leading state sponsor of terror and touted tough new sanctions on Tehran. “They do bad, bad things,” he explained. “To ensure this corrupt dictatorship never acquires nuclear weapons, I withdrew the United States from the disastrous Iran nuclear deal.”
  • ONE MORE THING! In a particularly – and unexpectedly – heartwarming moment during the address (and perhaps the singularly memorable in recent memory), the President introduced Judah Samet to the nation. Samet, who survived the Holocaust, also survived the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh last year. Yesterday, he turned 81 – and when the President mentioned that it was his birthday, the chamber filled with an impromptu rendition in Samet’s honor. As it wrapped, the President quipped, “They would not do that for me, Judah.”
