Kid’s Lemonade Stand Raises $13K To Reunite Immigrant Families

The Bottom Line: Through a lemonade stand at their house and a virtual one online, this family raised thousands.

Shannon Cofrin Gaggero talked to her son about how they could help children separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border and her six-year-old came up with a great suggestion: a lemonade stand. So the family set one up in front of their Atlanta home, where Gaggero says, “it’s hot as Hades.”

To raise awareness for the lemonade stand, the mom started a Facebook fundraising page, which continued to supplement the in-person lemonade stand for a few more days. On Sunday, the Gaggero family raised more than $1,000 for RAICES, a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal and educational services for immigrants. And within six days, the virtual lemonade stand on the Facebook fundraiser raised over $13,000.

Gaggero says she’s very proud of her son and what they’ve accomplished. And even though he’s a little young to understand the scope of the family separation issue, he gets it on some level. “It tugged at his heart strings,” Gaggero says. “For kids, the concept of being separated from your parents is very real and very scary.”
