Police Kill Armed Man At Oregon School Amid Custody Dispute

Police shot and killed an armed man at Cascade Middle School in Eugene, Oregon while they tried to escort him from the property on Friday (January 11) morning. Authorities said the unidentified man showed up at the school amid a custody dispute and was asked to leave the building.

As he was being escorted outside, the man pulled a gun, forcing officers to open fire. The school was placed on lockdown for nearly four hours. Students were evacuated from the building and brought to a local church while police investigated the fatal shooting.

Authorities said that no children were in danger and the only victim was the armed male suspect.

Many concerned parents gathered near the school, waiting to hear more information. Some students were able to call their parents from inside and assured them that they were safe.

“She's 11 and she was able to call from her band class and let us know that she's fine, which is a relief for us,” Gerardo Arangure, told KVAL.

“Officers are asked to deal with so many dynamic and dangerous situations,” Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said in a tweet. “Police officer training is so critical. We are so glad that the students and staff were kept safe. Excellent investigators are working through the weekend.”
