NWS: South Florida Under an Excessive Heat Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Everyone can be vulnerable to heat-related illnesses even death due to prolonged exposure, but some groups are particularly vulnerable when there is a heat index of 105° F or higher for at least two hours.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson, Erika Benitez advises we all take precautions and drink plenty of fluids with electrolytes and skip alcohol and caffeine.

Never leave children or pets in a hot car and minimize direct exposure to the sun. Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.

"In addition to seeking a cool place to beat the heat, people working, walking, or recreating outside should remember that heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke can happen quickly." says Benitez. "If you feel lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint, seek medical attention immediately by calling 911."
