Gov. DeSantis Targets Disney World

The Florida legislature is returning to Tallahassee today for a special session on congressional re-districting maps, an issue with huge political implications. However, lawmakers are now being asked to deal with another topic as well. Speaking at The Villages, Gov. DeSantis said he now plans to take the fight against the Walt Disney Company to the House and Senate. "They also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968, and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District."

Which is better known as Disney World. The district was established by the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967, and gives Disney its unique ability to self-govern the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and other areas, along with its infrastructure.

Earlier this year, Disney publicly opposed the "Parental Rights in Education" bill, known by opponents as "Don't Say Gay." In response, DeSantis referred to Disney as a "woke" corporation, and said they had no business interfering in Florida politics.

If Disney's self-governing power is repealed, it would fall under the jurisdiction of two counties.

The legislature will be in special session for the next couple of days.
