If you've ever thought about bringing a furry friend into your home, now is the time.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is in dire need of adoptive or foster dog parents as their kennel in West Palm Beach has reached capacity due to an overwhelming number of drop-offs and an outbreak of the infectious pneumovirus.

The agency says the public is needed to help prevent dogs from being euthanized after routine testing showed that the respiratory illness had made its way into the shelter.

About 20 percent of the dogs are showing symptoms or are currently being treated for pneumovirus. They are being kept separate from the healthy dogs that are ready for adoption, but the fear is that the virus will continue to spread.

That's why Animal Care and Control is pleading with the public to take a dog home with them.

Visit the shelter's website to pick your pet and then arrange to swing by the kennel to meet him or her in person.
