Florida's teachers are getting more raises.
"In this year's budget, which I am officially today approving this line item, we did $800 million for teacher pay initiatives."
Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Renaissance Charter School in Wellington on Monday to announce he's approving the line item in the record $112 billion upcoming budget. The Legislation approved the budget in Tallahassee last week.
The governor says the state has spent $2 billion to increase teacher compensation while he's been in office.
While in Palm Beach County, DeSantis said the money would not only go toward hiking the minimum salary for teachers, but also for veteran teachers.
Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, who is stepping down next month after more than three years in the position, said that Florida is in the Top 5 for teacher compensation, when you count bonuses. He said the state was in the "bottom 25" when DeSantis became governor.
The governor also mentioned the new progress monitoring system that will replace the Florida Standards Assessment tests for the 2022/23 academic year.
Renaissance has already been using progress monitoring.
