Storms, Tornadoes Bring Damage to Florida West Coast

FORT MYERS -- Cleanup is underway after damage reported from several tornadoes and possible tornadoes that struck Florida's west coast Sunday.

The National Weather Service says the one that caused the most damage moved into the Iona area near Fort Myers, around 7:40 a.m. Sunday. It ranked as an EF-2 on the Fujita scale with top winds of 118 mph. It went through the Point Breeze, Tropicana and Century 21 mobile home parks, damaging 108 parks.

30 were completely destroyed with some knocked off their foundations, and another 51 had major damage. At least three minor injuries reported.

An EF-1 tornado struck near Placida in Charlotte County Sunday morning, damaging 35 homes and a marina storage facility. Top winds 110 mph.

A semi flipped on its side in high winds on I-75.

At one point around seven thousand people lost power in the Southwest Florida region but FPL's outage map showed that number around 400 by early Monday morning.

Some scattered damage was reported as a possible tornado moved into Pinellas County Sunday.

A tree crashed at an apartment complex in Clearwater on Osceola Avenue, and debris fell off the Bank of America building in downtown Clearwater. In Spring Hill, the Sheriff's Office sent out a photo of damage to the roof of a gas pump at a convenience store.
