Broward School Board Recommends Firing Teacher Over Mask Flap

By a unanimous vote, the Broward School Board recommends a high school teacher be fired for refusing to wear a mask on campus. The school mask mandate has since been rescinded, but Broward School Board members say they are concerned about the defiance shown by 57-year-old John Alavrez, a science teacher at Piper High School in Sunrise. Dr. Rosalind Osgood says he was sent home in September and she doesn't think he should come back. Alvarez says he plans to appeal the recommendation to a state administrative law judge. He's accused of insubordination, neglect of duty and incompetence. He was sent home in September with pay. Alvarez has been with the Broward School District since 2007.
