New Florida rule leaves quarantine decision for students up to parents.

The Florida Department of Health has issued an emergency rule that allows parents to decide if their children should quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19. Speaking in Kissimmee Wedneday, Governor Ron Desantis says if the child isn't showing symptoms, it should be up to the parents whether or not they're quarantined.

"Quarantining healthy students is incredibly damaging for their educational advancement," Governor DeSantis said. 'It's also incredibly disruptive for families all throughout the state of Florida."

The governor says Florida will be following a symptoms based approach. If a student is asymptomatic, the new rules says they should be allowed to stay in school.

"You have people that are just not sick that are being kept out of activities. That's a big, big harm. Especially for kids playing sports. People that are in their senior year of high school. You may miss a couple of games."

The emergency rule also allows parents and legal guardians "sole discretion" to opt-out students from mask requirements. The emergency rule was signed by the governor's new state Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.
