Hillsborough GOP Chair to DeSantis: Shut Down Capitol Police Tampa Office

TAMPA -- The chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Party has drafted a letter to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, urging him to kick the U.S. Capitol Police field office out of Tampa and Florida.

Capitol Police announced last week that it would establish field offices in Tampa and San Francisco, California, as part of a "regional approach" to investigating and prosecuting threats against members of Congress. A statement from the agency said that California and Florida were "where the majority of threats are" to members of Congress.

The county GOP chair, retired Air Force Colonel Jim Waurishuk, wrote in a letter posted to the county party's Facebook page that the Capitol Police field office was "circumventing the authority of our Sheriffs and the State Constitution." His letter cited Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution and insisted the agency has no jurisdiction unless officers are in the District of Columbia or are actively protecting an elected federal official.
