South Florida Closes Beaches Fourth Of July Weekend

Hold the fireworks, bbq and tanning beach plans South Florida. One more county has joined the growing list of beach closures for the Fourth of July weekend. On Monday, Monroe County became the latest to close access to beaches this upcoming weekend. County officials said beaches will close at 5 p.m. Thursday and reopen on Tuesday, July 7th.

Further up north, in Broward County, Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy F. Cooper, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Lauderdale By the Sea Mayor Christopher Vincent announced Sunday that they too will be closing their city's beaches starting Friday, July 3rd and ending Sunday, July 5th. In Sunday's news conference Mayor Trantalis said, "We feel we will not be able to provide the necessary safe environment everyone is entitled to enjoy when they come to our beaches". Moreover, on Monday morning, Broward Mayor Dale Holness said it was necessary to close the beaches amid an increase in COVID-19 cases.

As a reminder, on Friday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez signed an emergency order closing beaches starting Friday, July 3rd and ending Tuesday, July 7th. To which, Mayor Trantalis said, "So, when Miami-Dade made the decision, it was incumbent upon us to realize that the influx of visitors that would otherwise go to Miami-Dade would ultimately come north." According to figures released by the Florida Department of Health on Monday's update, Florida added 5,266 new Coronavirus cases bringing the state's total to 146,341 and the death toll is now 3,447.

Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner announced Monday morning that beach closures will start Friday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 5th. Mayor Kerner also cited the need to take action because of the rising number of coronavirus cases in Palm Beach County.
