Fisherman Blames FWC Spraying For Tumors On Fish From Lake Okeechobee

New concerns about Lake Okeechobee.

"Week after week, day after day, we're pulling out more of these damaged fish with tumors and burn marks on their sides."

Fisherman Jason Blair says spraying by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is to blame. He calls the tumors unusual to see until recently.

"Something that I've never seen before until the last couple of months in these heavily-sprayed areas."

FWC says herbicide spraying is needed to control the spread of non-native plants that block navigation channels and crowd out native plants.

The herbicides undergo years of evaluation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The commission also says lesions in fish are not uncommon, often caused naturally by secondary infections as a result of physical injury.

But Blair plans to continue protesting the spraying.
